Today, we participated in a round table discussion led by U.S. Senator @marcorubiofla regarding ongoing, hurricane-related recovery efforts. Senator Rubio then toured and assessed damage at Fishermen’s Community Hospital. Immediately following #HurricaneIrma, we built a field hospital in the parking lot of Fishermen’s Community Hospital. Since the storm, we have cared for over 4,000 patients. We have stayed committed to the community during the recovery phase and will continue our efforts with the building of our new modular unit as we look forward to breaking ground on our permanent structure.

Baptist Health is full of everyday heroes who go above and beyond to care for others. Meet Obed Bello, R.N., Assistant Nurse Manager, Emergency Department at Baptist Hospital of Miami . . “In high school, I was on a law and criminal justice track. During senior year, my grandfather passed away, which was a driving force for me to pursue a career in healthcare instead. I dreamed of working in the ER, at the front line. I started my career at Baptist Hospital as a patient transporter, moved up to patient care technician, and have held several nursing roles in the ER. Baptist Health provided educational support to help me pursue a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in nursing. My job is satisfying on three levels: I’m able to help our patients and their families and friends, and see many success stories; I have the opportunity to motivate and coach employees and watch others move up the ladder; and by impacting the lives of our patients and employees, I continue learning and growing personally and professionally. I think personal growth is very important, so I am always reading, and on occasion I also work with the Monroe County Fire Department as a flight nurse to keep up with my trauma training. As a father of two, I strive to balance work and life, while showing my kids that making a difference in the lives of others is very fulfilling.” . . #PeopleCaringforPeople #TeamPineapple #EverydayHeroes

Baptist Health is full of everyday heroes who go above and beyond to care for others. Meet Thi T. Squire, Community Garden Project Manager at Homestead Hospital. . . “I met Bill Duquette, Chief Executive Officer, of Homestead Hospital, several years ago. We discussed the vacant land and his goal to create a space that would benefit our community. Having seen my work, he asked me to write a proposal and one year later, the Grow2Heal Garden program began. My idea was to teach families and kids how to grow and prepare nutritious meals, make healthier food choices, and ultimately have better health outcomes. Each year the program continues to expand as we reach out to more kids with programs like GrowYourLunch, which had over 800 students last year. My days are busy. I work in the garden in the morning; have a field trip with school kids every week, where they learn to prepare delicious nutritious food from food grown in the garden; write grants; create programming for the community and oversee volunteers from high schools and local colleges. My inspiration comes from my students and how proud they are when they discover something new. One student told me her family never ate vegetables. After assisting with classes, she learned different cooking techniques and when she saw a whole jalapeno, she said ‘WOW’, and told me I changed her life – ‘now I eat vegetables and I love them.’ It makes me smile.” . #PeopleCaringForPeople #TeamPineapple #EverydayHeroes

Baptist Health is full of everyday heroes who go above and beyond to care for others. Meet Cristina Vigoa, Athletic Trainer, and Rob Henry, Athletic Trainer and Sports Medicine Outreach Coordinator with Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. . . “Most athletic trainers participate in sports and their passion begins in high school. As young athletes they play sports, receive injuries, are treated by athletic trainers, who are great mentors and encouraged to pursue their careers. ‘It was very cool that the athletic trainer was always there,’ says Rob, ‘and I was always fascinated with the health field, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity.’ Athletic trainers have many paths available to them, Cristina says, ‘I work directly with patients to prepare them for physicians, getting a medical history, performing a thorough evaluation, education and discussions regarding expectations. My reward is working with a patient from injury, through healing and then getting them back to what they love.’ Rob adds, ‘as an athletic trainer and sports medicine outreach coordinator, I feel like I’m helping the community. I’m always setting up the next event and I practice my athletic training skills by administering first aid at the events.’ We’re both educators and have the opportunity to share valuable information every day, like encouraging children to focus on more than one sport to develop different muscle groups. We don’t feel like heroes; these are our jobs, and we wake up every morning enjoying what we do -- lucky to work with the best orthopedic surgeons and physicians in the world.” . #PeopleCaringforPeople #TeamPineapple #EverydayHeroes

Head over to @taylorwalkerfit’s live stories before it disappears or to our Facebook page @baptisthealthsf for the live video. #repost ・・・ {Plant Based Diets 🌱} @rd_amy, @lucette_rd and I had so much fun discussing all things plant based live on Facebook and Instagram today! Make sure to check out the video in today’s stories! We talk about what it means to be a “flexitarian”, vegetarian vs. vegan, the importance of whole grains, plant based protein sources and the fact that you can still eat meat while living and consuming a predominantly plant-based diet. Yup! It’s true. A special thank you to the @thenutritiouslifestudio & @nutritiouslifeofficial we had so much fun and I felt so much more confident discussing this info thanks to you! #baptisthealthpartner #nutritiouslife
