Spigella marilandica or “Indian Pink” is a native flower species to the Eastern United States. The only reason I know this because I recently discovered the most informative plant podcast on the 🌎. Check out @indefenseofplants to cure your case of plant blindness, or satisfy the scientist in you and start discerning the differences between all of those uniquely beautiful green leaves in your backyard. Tropical ecology nuts, don’t fret there is plenty in there for you as well. 🤘🏽

Another tiny mystery of the macro world exposed while editing. This is a small fuzzy arboreal fern I found on the forest floor. The image encompasses an area about the size of a small thumbtack. I noticed a cluster of yellow spheres on part of the fern. Swipe to the next picture to see a zoomed in version of this image. You can also see a slightly segmented black organism near these spheres. The truth is, I don’t have a clue as to what these are and that’s okay. Fear of the unknown and egoism has no place in ecology. With that being said, does anyone know what on Earth these things are?

Mornings in the Blue Ridge Mountains makes me appreciate the majesty of this mystical and vast backyard we call Appalachia.

There is nothing more peaceful than watching the natural defoliation of a tree.

Three days up river paddling in silence. Our motor was broken, our rice was soaked, and our spirits were almost crushed. Until @paulrosolie caught this catfish that is locally referred to as “Doncella” (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum). The four of us feasted on this beautiful fish, being careful not to waste a single morsel. Needless to say, this was a morale building meal.

Turn up your screen brightness and zoom in to fully appreciate how infinitely complex this little creature is. By the way, it’s about the size of your thumbnail. 🤯🤯🤯

My eyes after scanning 100’s of camera trap videos from my last trip to the jungle OR the eye of a species we affectionally refer to as the “sticky frog” because of the tremendous amount of mucous it secretes as a defense mechanism. Needless to say, there was cleanup involved after taking this picture. Thanks @hollyodonnell.conservationist for the assist!
