Fandom is “born out of a mix of fascination and frustration,” says Henry Jenkins, a scholar of fan activity. Nowhere is Jenkins’s constructive view of fandom more evident than at Comic-Con International, in San Diego. Watch our contributor Michael Schulman interview this year’s attendees, then tap the link in our bio to read his story on the power of the modern fandom, from this week’s issue of the magazine. Video produced by @yara_bish and edited by @thebrianredondo.

Have the fans gone mad? In May, more than 1.7 million people signed a petition to “remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers.” The outcry against “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” bore similarities—angry fans swarmed Rotten Tomatoes, posting bad reviews, and petitioned Disney to strike the film from the “official canon.” To some diehard devotees, “an attack against a celebrity or a beloved character is an attack against the fans, and it is their duty to retaliate,” Michael Schulman writes. At the link in our bio, Schulman dives into the modern fandom—how it’s changed, and what its new power means for creators. Illustration by @laura_breiling.

Meet Matthew Lopez, the playwright responsible for an award-winning seven-hour epic about gay life in New York City, which he first conceived of years ago, while sitting in Central Park. “The Inheritance” presents a lovingly wry panorama of New York’s gay community. It is also a stirring reflection on the aftermath of the AIDS epidemic. Tap the link in our bio to read more about the epic play, which opens soon on Broadway, after a sold-out run in London. Plenty of fashion designers have made moves into the art world, but no major visual artist has produced a fashion line—until Sterling Ruby. “It’s one of the reasons I’m doing it,” he told @christinabinkley. He said he hopes the clothing line, which ranges from $350 logo T-shirts to one-of-a-kind items costing tens of thousands of dollars, will democratize his work by making it available to a wider audience. But he also worried that his new venture could depress the prices of his art. At the link in our bio, read about Ruby’s foray into the fashion world and the runway show that made him think, “Fuck being an artist—this is wonderful.” Photograph by Sebastián Liste / Noor for The New Yorker.

In the summer of 2016, Mike Mariani quit his job, packed up whatever would fit in his car, and drove across the country in hopes of finding a solution to his overwhelming and unrelenting exhaustion. He was one of many patients diagnosed with chronic-fatigue syndrome who had moved from all over the country to one small town in Nevada for an experimental drug, Ampligen, that some believe is the only effective treatment for C.F.S. “I didn’t feel like a normal person for one minute of one hour of one day until I got on Ampligen," one woman said. Then, the drug disappeared. Tap the link in our bio to read more.

Documents obtained by @ronanfarrow reveal that the M.I.T Media Lab had a deeper fundraising relationship with Jeffrey Epstein than it has previously acknowledged. Epstein was marked as “disqualified” in the M.I.T.’s official donor database, but the Media Lab continued to accept money from him, consulted with him about the use of the funds, and avoided disclosing the full extent of the contributions. Perhaps most notably, Epstein appeared to serve as an intermediary between the lab and other wealthy donors, soliciting millions of dollars in donations from individuals including Bill Gates and the investor Leon Black. Tap the link in our bio to read Farrow’s full report.
