These critically endangered tree kangaroos had been hunted almost to extinction. Now an initiative that connects local communities and conservation groups could be their last hope. ⠀ ⠀ Tree kangaroos are found only in the rainforests of Australia, West Papua, and Papua New Guinea (PNG). Looking like a cross between a kangaroo and a lemur, they have adapted to life in the trees, with shorter hind legs and stronger forelimbs for climbing. Despite weighing up to 16kg, tree kangaroos are remarkably elusive, and often invisible high in the forest canopy. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ ⠀ #biodiversityday #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #kangaroo #planetearth #fridaysforfuture #extinctionrebellion #biodiversity #instaphoto #unitednations

Dr Cynthia Maung is a hero. For the last 30 years, she has been helping refugees along the Thai-Myanmar border access urgent medical assistance - particularly mothers and their young children. We need more women like Dr Cynthia in leadership positions, women who know first-hand what is happening on-the-ground in conflict-affected areas. By celebrating women activists and peacebuilders, N-Peace Awards raises their profile and supports women's rights, with the hope of building lasting peace in the Asia region. #NPeaceAwards #conflict #women #girls #health #education #Myanmar #Thailand #refugeeswelcome

🤗📱👶We’re in the business of making tech work harder for this little bundle of joy and hundreds of millions of children in #India – a country that runs the world’s largest immunization campaign every year. ⠀ ⠀ @undpinindia worked with India’s Ministry of Health and @gavialliance to develop a low-cost tech solution that ensures vaccines are delivered safely across India, they’re stored at the right temperature, and stocks don’t run out, not even in the most far flung districts. ⠀ ⠀ India’s pioneering e-Vin programme uses #bigdata to record 80 million temperature samples and two million online transactions every month, helping the government anticipate surges in demand and ensure vaccines don’t go bad in storage, so every child can be vaccinated safely and on time. #worldhealthday #health #vaccineswork #healthy

Tuberculosis is one of the top four causes of death in Indonesia, claiming over 100K lives each year. ⠀ ⠀ TB can leave patients and their families in catastrophic financial hardship. Even though the government provides free TB tests and medicines at public facilities across Indonesia, out-of-pocket expenses (such as travel, follow-up visits, hospitalization, food supplements) and loss of income can total around US$169 for each TB patient. ⠀ ⠀ We're on the ground with a range of partners and support from #Japan, making TB treatment more accessible to ordinary Indonesians. ⠀ #WorldHealthDay #healthforall #health #tuberculosis

What makes you happy? Can you describe #happiness😍 in one word? Numerous studies now show happiness has little to do with wealth and so much to do with wellbeing, community, family, meaningful purpose and leisure. What do the happiest countries in the world have in common? #happinessquotes #happiness #happiness😍

In a country where older men dominate the business landscape, Florence is an outlier. She has a successful retail business in the Solomon Islands.⠀ ⠀ Women in the Solomon Islands are more likely than men to experience challenges in starting a business. They often have lower levels of education, financial illiteracy, and face intimidation by officials. ⠀ ⠀ Florence now wants to help others like her to navigate the business world, especially youth. In a culture that values age and experience, the potential for youth to pursue creative venture is often overlooked. The result was the creation of lumiWaka, a co-working space to empower youth to navigate the turns of business development. With the IumiWaka co-working space and inspiring guides like Florence, the goal is to have more women become prosperous entrepreneurs.⠀ ⠀ #WomensDay @UNDP_Pacific @undpsolomon⠀ #unitednations #undp #globalgoals #genderequality #CSW63 #innovate #innovation #Entrepreneurs #SDGs #solomonIslands #WomensRights #breakingbarriers

A doctor providing maternal healthcare to refugees on the borders of Myanmar. A man working to end child marriage and menstruation taboos in rural Nepal. A young activist painting the streets with messages to campaign for peace in Afghanistan. What do they all have in common? They’re just some of the winners of this year’s UNDP N-Peace Awards. Every year, we recognize some of the region’s most inspirational peacebuilders and gender equality advocates, dedicated to making the world a better, fairer, place where the voices of those marginalized in society are heard... especially during and after conflict. On 5 March, a Gala in Bangkok will bring all of this year’s winners together to celebrate their achievements. Stay tuned for our Instastory of the evening! (Winners Photos, left to right: Cynthia Maung, Hira Singh Thapa, Muqadasa Ahmadzai, Mary Akrami, Mahira Miyanji, Samira Gutoc, Khojasta Sameyee, Mira Kusumarini, Lokshari Kunwar, Visaka Dharmadasa) #peace #UN #Asia #feminism #gender #genderequality #SDGs #UNDP #activism #peacebuilders

Know of innovative local action for climate change adaptation or mitigation? The #EquatorPrize is now open for nominations. The Equator Initiative is a United Nations-led partnership that brings together governments, civil society, grassroots organizations, and businesses to foster resilient communities by recognizing and advancing local nature-based solutions for sustainable development. One in three women experience violence in their lifetime, across all social status, class, race, country or age group. For many of them, the #MeToo moment hasn’t come yet, because speaking out can have fatal consequences, and survival is a long and complicated journey.⠀ *A UN study of 10,000 men in Asia and the Pacific, released in 2013, found that overall nearly half of those men interviewed reported using physical and/or sexual violence against a female partner, ranging from 26 percent to 80 percent across the sites studied. Nearly a quarter of men interviewed reported perpetrating rape against a woman or girl, ranging from 10 percent to 62 percent across the sites. #gillette #metoo #hearmetoo #planet5050
