A growing water crisis. Water stress and drought are as old as civilization, and while human beings have devised many ways to guard against these threats, economies have evolved in ways that make us more vulnerable. #waterstress #waterrisk #water #drought #migration #conflict #climate #climatechange #food #foodsecurity #watercrisis #waterresources #freshwater #agriculture

#ForestWatcher is designed to allow easy, offline access to data about forest change from Global Forest Watch. The app displays forest change straight on the mobile devices in the hands of forest managers, indigenous communities and law enforcement anywhere in the world, regardless of connectivity. @globalforests #mobileapps #forests #application #mapping #software #deforestation #logging #landtenure #landrights #protectedareas

By linking remote sensing systems to local forest monitoring efforts, #ForestWatcher brings the analytical power of the space age to the palm of every environmental defender's hand. "With Forest Watcher, we can now have intelligence-led patrols in Kibale National Park," reported Agaba Hillary Kumanya, a senior warden for ecological monitoring with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. "We no longer go randomly to places, but instead know where to look for the latest forest loss." The app has already proven useful in increasing effective patrols of protected areas, which are vital to protecting the world's last remaining forests. @globalforests #mobileapps #forests #application #mapping #software #deforestation #logging #landtenure #landrights #protectedareas

Deforestation often happens beyond the view of those with the mandate or power to stop it. While systems like @globalforests monitor forests remotely, those on the frontlines of deforestation often lack internet connection needed to access and act on this information. A new mobile app called #ForestWatcher changes this equation. #mobileapp #forests #application #mapping #software #deforestation #logging #landtenure #landrights #protectedareas

By now, you’ve probably heard about the world’s problem with food loss and waste. The new SDG Target 12.3 on Food Loss and Waste: 2017 Progress Report, released by the Champions 12.3 coalition, lays out a roadmap for what both companies and governments need to do to address food loss and waste. Developed by a team of experts from WRI and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), it’s the first comprehensive, time-bound roadmap we’re aware of that specifically addresses one of the 169 SDG Targets. #SDGs #champions123 #foodloss #foodwaste #foodsecurity #SDG12 #GlobalGoals

If one had to develop a fictional narrative to accompany scientific projections of a warming world, perhaps the writers might have come up with a story of extreme weather events similar to what we have seen over the past month. But it would have taken place decades in the future. Unfortunately, there is nothing fictional about these deadly events, which have destroyed lives, homes and business around the world. We need to face the realities of climate change today, not fall for the fantasy that we can just ignore them and they will go away. #ClimateChange #2050isNow #climate #flooding #hurricanes #climatescience #climatechangeisreal #mindthescience #infrastructure #cities

Wrenching stories of loss and hardship after hurricanes made vivid and upsetting viewing in recent days. An even greater number of people in India, Bangladesh and Nepal were recently hit by record-setting floods. For the world's poorest people in particular, the extreme weather event is just the beginning, with impacts felt for weeks, months and, in some cases, years after. The real opportunity for hard-hit cities lies not just in rebuilding, but in a smart recovery. A smart recovery can increase not only climate resilience, but also productivity, efficiency and equitability. #cities #climateresilience #hurricanes #flooding #naturaldisasters #infrastructure

In 2015, wildfire burned over 10 million acres of land across the United States for the first time in recorded history. This was no anomaly: 9 of the 10 worst fire seasons have all occurred since 2000. 2017 is on pace to join the list with nearly 8.5 million acres burned as of September 17. Forest restoration—the strategic removal of brush and shrubs and selective thinning of trees—could help return forests to a healthier state. However, the agency is far short of the resources it would need to do to the job at the scale required. An ambitious new approach to financing is needed. One such approach, called the Forest Resilience Bond, will allow private investors to help close the gap between the need for forest restoration and the capital available for restoration projects. #forestresiliencebond #forestfires #naturalinfrastructure #forests #wildfires #investments

Forests and SDGs: Taking a Second Look. Wild fruits, nuts, mushrooms and bush meat supplement diets #SDG2, and medicinal plants are often a first recourse for illness #SDG3. Forest products supply more than 20 percent of the household income for local families #SDG1, and tropical forests shelter most of the world’s terrestrial biological diversity #SDG15. And, as a safe, natural means of carbon capture and storage, forests are increasingly recognized as an essential element of any strategy to stabilize our climate #SDG13. #SDGs #forests #UNGA #UNGA72 #UNGA2017 @globalforests @restore_forward

Hurricanes and intense flooding will become commonplace in a changing climate. We know that rising sea levels will cause storm surges to swell to new heights, and warmer ocean temperatures will intensify hurricanes. At the same time, precipitation patterns are shifting. Equatorial regions are losing rainwater, while other parts of the world are suffering from increasing rainfall. To keep our heads above water and weather these storms, we must protect people by building stronger, more resilient communities. It sounds obvious, but we must plan for climate change. #climateresilience #climateadaptation #climatechange #climate #actonclimate #climateaction #hurricanes #sealevelrise #coastalflooding #flooding

Residential and commercial buildings are the largest consumers of energy in urban areas. Relatively small changes to building codes and regulations can reduce energy use by up to 50 to 90 percent in new buildings and 50 to 75 percent in existing buildings. #energy #efficiency #energyefficiency #buildings #cities #citiesforall

The average cost of electricity from residential rooftop solar in India and China is already within the same range as natural gas-fired electricity and continues to decline. In sub-Saharan Africa too, solar is taking off. In 2015, the number of households using pay-as-you-go solar systems—where companies rent equipment to consumers for a small fee, often paid via mobile phone—doubled to between 450,000 and 500,000. #energy #solar #renewable #rooftopsolar #PAYG #urbandevelopment #urbanpoor #cities #citiesforall
